Children's short story - Stay away from the woods

Children’s Short Story – Stay Away From the Woods

Below is a children’s short story I wrote. The inspiration came from an illustration of a little girl sitting with a bear that I saw on Instagram. From seeing that image a story began to transpire in my head so I picked up my notebook and wrote the below story. It is a tale of friendship written in rhyme with some repetition and I have also included a few illustrations. I hope you enjoy reading my short story.

Children’s Short Story – Stay Away From the Woods

Stay away from the woods,

As within lies a bear.

He is big and scary,

So you must take care.

*

Stay away from the woods,

Take the path and walk around.

You will be safe from the bear,

If you don’t make a sound.

*

Stay away from the woods,

And have a safe trip, my child.

Do as I have told you,

And don’t go wild.

I must stay away from the woods,

As they are not safe for me.

I will walk the path around,

And safe from the bear I will be.

*

I must stay away from the woods,

But what is that behind the tree?

I can’t see the bear anywhere.

So I will just pop in and see.

*

I must stay away from the woods.

That is what Mumma told me,

But here I am going deeper inside,

Following my curiosity.

Did no one tell you to stay away from the woods?

No one comes in as they say I am scary,

But that is not true.

I am just big and hairy.

*

Did no one tell you to stay away from the woods?

I have not seen anyone in a while.

But now you have come along,

And made me smile.

*

Did no one tell you to stay away from the woods?

I am glad you came in as I need a friend.

If you stay we can have fun together,

And play until the day’s end.

I am glad I came into the woods.

As I got to meet you bear.

You are friendly, funny and kind,

And you didn’t give me a scare.

*

I am glad I came into the woods.

As we have had lots of fun today.

Climbing trees and rolling down hills,

and having fun all the way.

*

I am glad I came into the woods.

And with you, I got to have fun and play.

I must go home now for my tea,

But I will visit you again another day.
